As we begin planning for the 2014-2015 school year, we are pleased
to share with you an exciting addition to the Barnard program. As you may be aware, we have offered one
class each of grade 1 and grade 2 Italian CILA programs this year where
students are immersed in the Italian language for 50% of their academic school
Since we have the in-house capacity to teach Italian as FLES,
Foreign Language in Elementary School, and because research has demonstrated
that second language acquisition at an early age is an asset in the child's
brain development, we are happy to announce all kindergarten students will
receive Italian class twice a week for 30 minutes, and grade one students will
receive Italian class three times a week for 30 minutes beginning in the fall. Second grade students will not receive Italian
class until the school year 2015-2016. At
that point, the students will be in their second year of the language
experience and will receive Italian class three times a week for 30 minutes
just as they did in grade one.
At the end of second grade beginning June 2016, students will have
the opportunity to apply for the lottery to enter the Italian Immersion program
offered at Jefferson Elementary School for grades 3 through 5.
We are looking forward to this exciting opportunity and to its
success in the coming years.
